Creative fatigue
Creative fatigue is the drop in response to an ad that its audience has seen too many times, which can show up as fewer clicks and a higher cost per result.
How it works
The first time people see an ad, some click. Shown again to the same people, it tends to get fewer clicks, so CTR falls and cost per result can rise. The usual sign is rising frequency while results fall. Frequency is the average number of times each Meta account saw the ad.
Meta flags it in some cases. It counts recent showings of the image or video, including other campaigns from your Page, and compares the ad’s cost per result with your past ads. A cost higher but under double means Creative limited; double or more means Creative fatigue. The status covers only ad sets with one creative, not Advantage+ catalog ads or dynamic creative. There, you read fatigue from the columns. For running Meta next to Google Shopping, see Facebook and Instagram ads for an online store.
Where you see it
- Meta Ads Manager: the Delivery column of an ad set or ad (Creative limited, Creative fatigue); the Frequency and CTR columns.
Example
Example store, not client data.
The tableware shop runs one video ad to one audience for four weeks. Week 1: 30,000 impressions reach 20,000 people, a frequency of 30,000 ÷ 20,000 = 1.5, and CTR is 1.2%. Week 4: 66,000 impressions reach 22,000 people, a frequency of 3, and CTR is 0.6%. Clicks per 1,000 impressions fall from 12 to 6, so at the same cost per 1,000 impressions each click costs twice as much.
Not to be confused with
- Seasonality — demand falling for everything at once. Fatigue hits one ad: a new ad launched in the same weeks does better. A seasonal drop also hits new ads and Google Shopping sales.
Right and wrong readings
- Wrong: “Frequency passed 3, so the ad is fatigued.” Right: Meta’s status weighs recent showings with cost per result against your past ads, and its help names no frequency cut-off. Meta says frequency may average 1 to 2 or be much higher, depending on budget, audience size and schedule.
- Wrong: “The ad is fatigued, so pause it.” Right: Meta recommends adding a new ad with a materially different image or video, and notes that keeping the original active may maximise results.
