Optimization score

Optimization score is Google's estimate of how well a Google Ads account or campaign is set to perform, shown as a percentage.

How it works

The score runs from 0% to 100%. By Google’s definition, 100% means the account can perform at its full potential. Google shows it for active campaigns, Performance Max and Shopping among them.

Google calculates it in real time from the account’s statistics, settings and status. It also draws on the impact of available recommendations and the recent history of recommendations. Each recommendation shows how much it would add to the score. The account reaches 100% by applying or dismissing all of them.

So the score mostly shows how much of Google’s list is still open. It is not a count of orders or revenue.

Where you see it

In Google Ads, on the Recommendations page, next to the recommendations and what each would add. The Google Ads API returns the score for the account and for each campaign. The field metrics.optimization_score_uplift shows how much the score would rise if all related recommendations were applied. For several accounts, the API combines the scores using each account’s optimization score weight.

Not to be confused with

  • Store score — GetProfit’s A–F score of an ad account across four areas: the data Google receives, products, campaign structure and the history of changes. It is not a Google metric, does not use optimization score and is calculated differently.
  • Ad strength — Google’s rating, from Poor to Excellent, of the assets in one asset group or responsive search ad. Raising it is one of the recommendations behind optimization score.

Right and wrong readings

  • Wrong: “The score went from 70% to 100%, so the account now sells more.” Right: dismissing a recommendation raises the score just as applying one does, and a dismissal changes no setting. A higher score means a shorter list of open recommendations, not more revenue.
