Budget pacing
Budget pacing is checking whether ad spend is on course to use up the monthly plan by the end of the month, without running ahead or falling behind.
How it works
In Google Ads you set an average daily budget, not a monthly one. A campaign spends less than that on some days and more on others, but for the month Google charges no more than 30.4 times the daily budget. This cap is the monthly spending limit. So pacing looks at the month as a whole: spend to date against the share of the month that has passed.
A campaign that runs ahead early has less left for the days that remain. If the daily budget is the monthly plan divided by 30.4, a campaign that falls behind is held back by something other than the budget, and raising the budget alone won’t speed it up.
For a monthly tracking sheet, see Google Ads budget pacing for Performance Max. For spreading the year’s budget across months, see a month-by-month Google Ads budget plan.
Formula
Pace = spend to date ÷ (monthly plan × days passed ÷ days in the month)
Example
Example store, not client data.
The tableware shop plans 40,000 a month for its one campaign and sets a daily budget of 1,316 (40,000 ÷ 30.4). By 12 September it has spent 19,200, and September has 30 days. The plan for the first 12 days is 40,000 × 12 ÷ 30 = 16,000, so the pace is 19,200 ÷ 16,000 = 120%.
How GetProfit reads it
If you correct the pace through the budget, the portal’s methodology says to change it by no more than 20% at a time and to keep the daily budget at least three times the target CPA. In the change feed, the portal flags budget changes of 20% or more and counts 50% or more as sharp.
Right and wrong readings
- Wrong: “A 120% pace on day 12 means the month closes at 19,200 ÷ 12 × 30 = 48,000.” Right: with the daily budget unchanged, Google charges no more than 30.4 × 1,316 ≈ 40,000 for the month, so at most 20,800 is left for the other 18 days.
