Best sellers report
The Best sellers report is a Merchant Center ranking of the most popular products and brands on Google, by category and country, that shows which you carry.
How it works
Google ranks products and brands by the estimated number of units sold across its ads and organic listings. Each ranking covers one Google product category and one country, over a week or a month. A product here is a cluster: the offers and variants that represent the same product.
Next to each row, the report shows the rank in the previous period and demand relative to the top item in the category. It also marks whether you have the product: in stock, out of stock, or not in your product data at all. The ranking covers the whole market, including products you do not sell. That makes it a list to check your catalogue against in assortment planning.
The Best sellers report guide shows how to turn the report into a gap list before you call a supplier. For choosing a new country, see researching an expansion market.
Where you see it
Merchant Center lists it among Google’s market insights reports, if the account meets the minimum eligibility requirements. The Merchant API returns the same data as two tables: products and brands.
Example
Example store, not client data.
The tableware shop opens the monthly ranking for its main category in its home country. Of the top 50 products, it carries 18 in stock and 4 that have run out. The other 28 are not in its product data. The 28 go on the list for suppliers, and the 4 need restocking.
Not to be confused with
- Bestseller — a product that sells more than most others in your own range over a period. The report ranks sales across the whole market.
Right and wrong readings
- Wrong: “The report marks this product as in stock, so we sell it in this country.” Right: the stock status ignores the report’s country filter. A product in stock for one country in your product data shows as in stock in every country’s ranking.
- Wrong: “Rank 1 means the best-selling product on Google.” Right: rank 1 is the top of one category, in one country, over one week or month.
